Why Content Depth Determines AI Citation

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI Overviews answer a question, they do not randomly select sources — they prefer pages that demonstrate comprehensive, well-structured coverage of the queried topic. Content depth is one of the strongest signals in this selection process.

Think of it from the AI engine’s perspective: it is trying to give users the most complete, accurate answer possible. A page with 300 words and no headings cannot provide the depth of context that a 2,000-word, well-sectioned page with tables, lists, and citations can. The deeper page wins the citation.
